The sun over the skyskrapers, the never ending noise from traffic just interrupted from a siren now and then, some honking from a random car, people in a line, yellow cabs, the smell from the hot dog carts ... you would think it would be a bit stressfull, but it really wasn't. For some reason I relax in New York City. Or maybe not relax, since I've been walking ten thousands of steps every day, but I found my kind of zen in this city. The city has met every expectation I had, and a bit more. I am definitely coming back. I have once again confirmed I'm a city girl. I thrive among countless of cafés, neon lights, people rushing along, or people just wandering while they look at the skyscrapers. Today there was a signing at the book store at the corner from our hotel. Not the bookstore around the corner with Meg Ryan behind the desk, but the signing was by Tom Hanks. It was so tempting to queque up to meet him, he seems like such a sympathetic person and is an incredible actor, but the line went over two blocks ... I chose to use the day in NY City for something else than quequeing. The New York Public Library! Such a majestic and fantastic building! We passed one of the employees at the library on our way into one of the venerable study halls and I kind of jokingly let out: It's not like I can get a library card here since I'm not an American! He answered me: Yes, you can, to my surprise. I only had to show an ID, and I am now a proud owner of my own New York Public Library Card. I am probably more proud of that card than I should. I have no idea if I ever get a chance to use it, but I think I'm going to let a Swedish YA book writer, Anna Ahlund, inspire me. She collects library cards, and I think this is just going to be my first card in my collection.
We planned a trip to The Top Of The Rock, Rockefeller Center, but we didn't plan waiting two hours. We ended up not doing it, but hey, I have been to the top of Empire State Building, only it was the last century. We ended up renting skates and skated at the rink at Rockefeller Center. OMG! How unreal is it to skate at the rink you've been seeing in hundreds of tv-shows and movies? It truly was a pinch me in the arm-moment. Insane! Also because it was insanely expensive! No, actually it was worth every dollar to skate at that rink.
When in New York City, why not a souvernir tattoo? I found Red Rocket Tattoo, and by a coincidence my tattooer, Dave, actually knew of Blue Arms Tattoo and Tony who made my first tattoo. It's a small world after all! And I am a bit more colorful now than I was leaving Oslo.
Tomorrow we are going to explore two small towns. First up is Poughkeepsie, the word John Cage from the Tv-series Ally McBeal used when his stuttering was really bad. It's also known from Friends, Ross dated a girl from Poughkeepsie. He falls asleep on a train and meet a girl living in Poughkeepsie. I have no idea what is in Poughkeepsie, but I have to stop by when I have the chance. I reckon the pulse is slower there, the houses are lower with gardens and might look like the movies.
